Matthew 1:22–25Scripture
Matthew chapter 1 22 says behold the virgin shall conceive actually verse 22 all this took place to fulfill that the Lord what the Lord had spoken by the prophet behold the virgin shall conceive and bear a son and they shall call his name Emmanuel which means God with us God with us. When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him.
He took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus. I love that. Well, we love you. We're thankful for your word, for the way that it speaks to our hearts. The way that your word calls us to repentance. Transitions our life from a life of sin to a life of holiness.
We're thankful for the saving mercies of your word. And Lord, we pray that you would stir in the hearts of men and women and children alike a desire for your word in this generation.
In your name we pray. Amen. So, have you ever been driving down the road?
For those of you who drive, those of you who do not drive, this will soon become a reality for you. But you're driving down the road, you're not really paying attention to how fast you're going. The reality is many of us just kind of follow the traffic ahead of us. You're driving down the road and all of a sudden, out of the corner of your eye, you see a cop sitting on the side of the road.
What is your first response? There's a bunch of things you we shock, dismay, panic maybe, and you pump the brakes.
Introduction
How many of you have ever pumped the brakes and realized you were going below the speed limit already?
The reality is when there is a chance of breaking the law and you then get near somebody who enforces the law, it always makes you pump your brakes.
Even if you're doing and obeying the law, it will always make you pump your brakes. So when we then we in this text when we hear that God is with us, it is like us driving down the road, it is an opportunity for a break check because this is the sovereign God of the universe who is holy in every way and and he not only has given us the law but he holds us accountable for how we live according to it.
It is like us.
This text really should make us go and pump the brakes because if God is with us then it should make us evaluate the kind of life we are living.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 3:04
It sounds wonderful honestly and we sing Christmas songs about it that God has drawn near us. But when we think of it in this respect, it helps us understand that we are sinners and we are saved by a gracious God.
Who has mercy on who he has mercy on, but also who nobody will escape his judgment. God with us. I have five I think it's five points. I think that's what it is. Five points I want to make this morning and we'll jump right in here. The first of which is this. In verse 22, it says, "All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet."
700 years earlier, we hear from a prophet that there one will be one who comes whose name is Jesus, who is Emmanuel, who is God with us, who will be a Messiah, who is a son, who will save his people.
Point 1God with us as a fulfillment of prophecy
This is good news. So firstly, first point, God with us as a fulfillment of prophecy.
God is with us. And how is he with us is the question. He is with us as a fulfillment of prophecy. So if you notice when you read this portion of the Scripture that it is offset, it's in quotations because it's quoting Isaiah. Now, Isaiah spoke this 700 years before the cradle rocked in Bethlehem, before Mary ever said yes.
The word had already been sent. And this is good news because if the word had already been sent 700 years earlier, then even before that, God had a plan.
God had a plan from the beginning of how he was going to deal with a sinful people.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 5:18
He had a plan of how he was going to help you in your time of trouble. God had a plan. And before the word ever came to give you encouragement, he had a plan for things. Before Mary ever said yes, the word had already been sent.
Listen, when God speaks something, it is already done in the unseen realm.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 5:41
God's word is final. It's final. The trouble for us today is we hear a lot of words when we come to church on Sunday, we open our Bible, we hear a lot of words of what God has done. There are over 600 prophecies in the Old Testament that have been fulfilled. Not one has been broken. This word is a fulfillment of prophecies.
It is pretty amazing. You can't trust any you people today. You can't you can't trust people like that. They'll say a thing and never do a thing. And it isn't that they're not good people. As parents, how many times have you said something and not followed through on it or okay, how many times have you said you were going to do something and then not done it because something else popped up that was a higher priority and then you try to have a conversation with your kids about it, right?
You're you're like, "Hey, you know, this is life. You know, yes, I did promise that I was going to do that. We I did declare that we were going to do that, but this is happening and you need to understand that there's some things sometimes in life things pop up and we have to prioritize it.
I didn't plan that somebody was going to pass and I didn't plan that my job was going to call me and I didn't plan that we were going to lose our house and I didn't plan that I wasn't going to have money in the bank and I didn't plan that you my mom your mom and I were going to get in a fight and I didn't plan all of this and this just popped up and it happened and it's out of our control but if none of that happened and everything was perfect then I would have been somebody you could have trust my word Then you can trust my promises then.
But sometimes things happen.
Ain't it awesome that when God says a thing, it happens?
Pastor Shawn Gray · 7:51
Like that's abnormal for us today. But when God declares a word, it happens. And there will be nothing to pop up to thwart his plan. That's amazing. That is amazing. Fulfillment is not the beginning.
Fulfillment of what God has promised is the manifestation of what has already been settled in heaven.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 8:16
It was prophesied that Jesus would come and he came. Now that sounds wonderful, right? It sounds wonderful that it was prophesied by Isaiah that Jesus would come and Jesus came. And we celebrate and we cheer and we applaud and we clap and we shout and internally we're excited that the Lord, the Messiah, the one who has come near us is finally near us.
And we're excited about that. But don't forget the cop on the side of the road. Because when God draws near, when a holy God draws near an unholy people don't respond like we do in post looking back.
People respond like someone driving down the road when they see a cop. And notice when you notice that when people see Jesus in all his glory, notice their response is not, "What's up, homie?
I'm so glad you're here. Fist bump." Notice that it's fear. Notice that it's a contrite spirit. Notice it's laying prostrate. Notice it is all of those things.
And could it be that we've created and fashioned a version of Jesus today that makes him our homie and not our Lord?
Pastor Shawn Gray · 9:54
Could it be that we don't see that we have a sin problem when we think about Jesus? Could it be? But the one that was prophesied about is God drawing near us.
Point 2God with us as a stumbling block
Number two, God with us as a stumbling block.
Oh man. Well, God's going to come near us and he's going to give me everything I ever wanted. Like the proverbial Santa Claus. Well, God's drawing near us. And so now all of our ailments are going to be healed and everything's going to be perfect and everything's going to be wonderful. Well, God's drawing near us and so everything's going to be peaceful and everything's going to be my life's going to be full of ease and everything is going to be just so.
So when God draws near, it gets easier, right? Actually, the Bible speaks about what it looks like when God draws near. When God comes, he comes as a stumbling block. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Emanuel, which means God with us. So, if he's with us, exactly. Break down for me, Sean.
How is he with us? He's with us as a stumbling block. That's what the Bible says. And they took offense to him later on in Matthew. I'm going to give you some Scriptures in Matthew and one in Corinthians, but later on in Matthew, jumping ahead, and they took offense at him. That's what happened. They took offense at him in Matthew 13:57.
And they took offense at him because Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except for in his own in his hometown and in his own household."
Matthew 21:442 and this is the one that I'm talking about. The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. 1 Corinthians 1:23. But we preach Christ crucified. This is the Christ that they preach. It may not be the Christ we often preach here in America, but this is the Christ that the apostles preached. We preach Christ crucified. A stumbling block to the Jews and folly to the Gentiles.
You see, if you preach Christ rightly, Christ is a stumbling block to the Jews and folly to everyone else.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 12:37
He's come, how has he come, Sean? As a stumbling block. Break that down for me, Sean. A stumbling block to the Jews and folly to all other people.
So, let's talk about this. Jesus was a stumbling block to the Jews. What does that mean? I believe that he was a stumbling block to religious pride. I think that might hit some of you today. The Jewish people were expecting a Messiah who would affirm their systems. There's some systems in America today, are there not? We're not Jews, but there are some systems in America today, are there not?
Yes. Systems of practice of religion, systems of how we function in our house, systems of our religious walks, systems, our theological positions. We have some systems today. The way we function, the way we live, the way we think, the way we engage God. We have systems that we don't want disrupted.
We have belief systems that we don't want disrupted by his word.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 13:51
It's amazing today. People will talk about what they believe and they will read Scriptures that contradict what they believe and then they will argue their belief over God's word.
It's fascinating to me. It will say it in black and white. It will denounce what they believe.
But their systems are so firm, they will crack the foundation of God's word.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 14:15
It's a problem. And the Jews had systems reward. They would affirm their systems. They would reward their righteousness. They would overthrow Rome. This is their idea what the Messiah would do. And sit on David's throne in political glory. But instead, here comes this carpenter son, some nobody claiming divine authority, eating with sinners, not with eating with holy people.
Eating with sinners, not religious people, rebuking the religious people, and announcing a kingdom that didn't look like what they had imagined.
That stumbled them. They stumbled over this Christ. They did not celebrate this God who came near. They stumbled over him because Jesus didn't play by their rules. He bypassed the temple system. He offended their traditions.
He offered grace where they demanded law and that ticked them off. Jesus still trips people up who want a God made in their image today.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 15:24
If your religion is based on performance, control or control.
I kind of got a thing about this right now because I believe that most of our problems, our angst, our issues today stem from, lack of control.
Most arguments today, if you work yourself back, has nothing to do with how a toothpaste is rolled, toothpaste tube is rolled. It has to do with control. It isn't have to do with how someone's treating you. It has to do with you wanting to control how they treat you. It's control. We want control everywhere. Control. Control affects everything today.
It affected the Jewish people then. It affects us now. Listen, control influences you. Your issue with control and your death hold on wanting control influences what you believe about prayer.
Okay. Are you with me today? What do you do with prayer? Now consider how much control influences your prayer life. God, do this and do that and do this. God, I want you to do this and that and this. Do this, that, and this. God, I want you to do this in this order. That, and then this. That's what prayer is.
Okay. Control. When we talk about free will, God's sovereignty, predestination, election, all of that stuff.
Control influences your interpretation of that.
Control builds systems that God comes to destroy because control is an illusion.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 17:33
God is in control. And trust me, you may not love that. You might shout me down right now about that, but in your real life, deep down, you may not love that.
But it's best for you that he's in control and you're not.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 18:00
That's best for you. Because if you are in control, Lord, help you. If he's in control, he will.
He will. Jesus still trips up people who want God made in their image. I believe today we the danger in the church today is we have people that are fashioning a version of Jesus that isn't Jesus worshiping at the throne of this version they created and one day will realize they never knew him.
That's scary because a false version of Jesus doesn't save.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 18:39
That doesn't save. I have the deepest concern in my heart today. I have the deepest concern in my heart today for people who believe they are saved by a version of God they fashioned who will one day be turned away from their heavenly home.
And we have a duty today to know him as he is, not as we want him to be.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 19:10
Oh, but he's a stumbling block to the Jews and he is folly to many of us because this Christ doesn't do things like we do things here in America.
He doesn't do things. Everything is flipped on its head. He says, "Come to me and die." He says, "Blessed are the poor in spirit." That message is a threat to everyone in this room today. This is who draws near.
A God who wants you dead so that he can make you alive in Christ.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 19:54
Death required.
The cross exposes human effort and says you can't save yourself.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 20:01
There is nothing you can do to save yourself. If not for God's grace, you're doomed. Place your faith entirely in him. Jesus was a stumbling block to the Jews. Jesus was a stumbling block to worldly wisdom. To the gentile mind, especially Greek philosophers and Roman elites, the idea of a crucified savior was just foolish.
God doesn't die. What? Kings don't suffer. Heroes don't hang on crosses. This was weakness, not power. But Paul says, "The foolishness of God is wiser than men." 1 Corinthians 1:25.
Jesus did not come to impress you. He came to overturn every false foundation with the wisdom of the cross.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 21:08
And people still stumble over a gospel that doesn't flatter their intellect.
They want TED talks and self-help and enlightenment.
But Jesus doesn't just educate you. He demands you surrender your life.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 21:25
And that's offensive to the autonomous mind. And Jesus was a stumbling block because he divides. And we feel like he should unite everything, everyone, and every desire. And Jesus said in Luke 12:51, "Do you think I have come to give peace on earth?
No. I tell you, I came to bring division. He is the great revealer. And when he enters and he comes near, when he enters the scene, masks fall, allegiances are exposed, and you can't stay on neutral ground anymore.
You have a choice to make. And he divides family members over who he is.
He is either the cornerstone you build your life on or is he or he is the stone you trip over in your rebellion.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 22:26
There is no middle ground. There is no gray area and there is no iffy zone for you to dwell.
Jesus is still dividing today.
Not because he hates you, but because truth forces a choice.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 22:49
This is why we want relative truth today. It's because no choice has to be made that is offensive to our personal desires. It's a problem.
He will not be a side dish in your spiritual buffet. His very presence demands repentance and loyalty and allegiance.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 23:06
And if you don't, you're not his. There is no gray area today.
Point 3God with us as a man
This is serious. Number three, God with us as a man. Oh man, I spent forever trying to decide if I even wanted to do this. But the Bible says he was a man. Says he was a son. Says he was a man. In our feminist woke culture, men aren't appreciated so much today. And if you watch any kind of sitcom any amount of time, we find pleasure in making fun of the stupidity of men.
We laugh at them. We mock them. We ignore them. We shame them. Men have become the butt, the proverbial butt of our jokes. Even inside the life of the church, we think it's comical to make fun of men. But God came as one. He could have come however he pleased, but he came as a man. He came as a man to restore some appreciation for men, not any kind of man.
Because when it spoke of this God who came with us and drew near us, he was like no manner of man we had ever seen. So this was a different kind of man. So to all of our feminists in here today who hate who all of the men haters in here today I want you to know there is a version of a man that you can get behind that you can appreciate that you can love that you could respect that you could honor and possibly submit to.
There is a version of that man and his name is Jesus. And it is God who's come near us to demonstrate what version of a man he had in mind when he first created man. And the reality is men today have fallen on their duty to be the man walking in his image. We have failed in this endeavor.
So to the feminists today, the men haters, those who have been had all kinds of horrible atrocities perpetrated against them by men, I want to apologize and tell you today, I'm sorry about that.
But Jesus, the God of the universe, came as one, but a different one than you've ever known. And I want to introduce you to him today. To the men in here today, you have a lot to learn about this man because he's not like any other man you've ever seen. And instead of marking your life by sitcoms, you should mark your life by the God who drew near.
Why was it a man? Well, 1 Corinthians 15:21 says, "For as by one man came death, by
A man has come also the resurrection of the dead." A man got us into this trouble, and it took a man to get us out.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 26:12
And them are the facts, folks. And notice that the punishment wasn't brought when Eve took a bite. It was brought when man did. The instruction was given to men. Men, this is why you're the leader of your home. And what you do affects your home like what Adam did affected the world. Your behavior affects your home like what Adam does affects the world.
In a time when masculinity is either demonized or distorted, Jesus stands as the unshakable model of what it means to be a man.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 26:58
Not toxic. Listen to me. Not passive. That seems to be the two extremes I see men being in their homes. Neither toxic or passive. Both are a problem. Well, you don't know my wife. If I'm not passive, I got a problem. I don't think God calls you to be the leader of your home unless it's going to cause a problem with your wife.
But that doesn't mean to become the leader of your home, you become toxic. And this is the great struggle. Listen, and you can't do this on your own strength. Can I get an amen? You need God's help. How you going to get it? That's why he drew near. That's why he draws near because you need his help.
Not toxic, not passive, not power- hungry, but bold, holy, servant-hearted, unshakably committed to truth, and fearless in love.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 28:02
That's the kind of man this was. Jesus wept. He didn't whine. Come on, men. I don't mind a man weeping. I have a problem with men whining. I'm okay with a man having a good cry. You can have a good cry and still be a man, but the moment you began whining, you crossed over into some version that is not Christlike.
He served. He served, but he did not surrender his authority. That's a hard one to balance, is it not? He submitted to the father, but never compromised righteousness.
He carried a cross rather than a chip on his shoulder.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 29:00
On that cross, he bore the sin of Adam, the shame of every broken man, and the punishment for every perversion and passivity.
And when he rose, he didn't just call us believers. He called us sons. Women, he calls you that, too. If I can be the bride of Christ, you can be a son. You feeling me? Okay. Yeah. I'm just right. You with me? He calls you sons. Why? Because sons get an inheritance. And you get the deposit of that inheritance by the Holy Spirit.
It's deposited, sealed up to the day of atonement as a guarantee for what you will one day fully receive. That's good news. But sons get that. Sons get that.
Jesus came to make something and because he was a son, he made sons.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 30:03
Are you with me? We were made in his image. Only a man could represent men. Only a man could step into covenant on behalf of men.
Only a man could shed blood to reconcile us to the father. I understand what men have become in our society by nature of the choices of men and by nature of the choices of progressive movement in today's society and just the total and absolute rebellion against any form of leadership at all and our view of men. But there is a version of a man that isn't so bad.
God is referred to as he. The son is referred to as he. Jesus calls a bunch of he to be the apostles. And there is something he is doing to establish his church. And there is a version of a man to do that is not bad. And for us to just sweep over this and say and it isn't to say that to it.
Why is it today in today's culture to draw attention to men and God's use of men is a denial of how he uses women?
I don't understand that. Do you understand the tension I feel in even speaking good of men from the pulpit?
Because here's what I here's what I feel in the room. Not in this room, in some other room, in another church. Okay? But the kickback that I feel and maybe it's personal is that when I celebrate men and God's use of men in Scripture that I feel like I there might be people both men and women who are sitting in the room going, "But what about the women he used?" Sean, you're right.
You're right. I'm not talking about that right now. My point is God with us as a man. But some of you that were thinking that about all the positive ways he uses women. Could it be that you don't want to celebrate that he's a man?
But see, when he comes, you get to take him as he is, or you don't get to take him at all.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 32:23
Are you with me today? Okay. So, I asked Brooke yesterday if I should do this. We didn't really know if I should, and then I did, and now we're moving on.
Point 4God with us as a son
God with us as a son. That's a man, Sean. Let's talk about his sunship, though, because this isn't a son who rolls his eyes when his father asks him something to do. I need you to I need you to take out the trash. Right? I mean, and some of you are smart. You're smarter than that. I mean, you never roll your eyes like, "Oh," when your dad asks something to do because there's a block and it might get knocked off.
You know what I mean? You don't do that in public. But behind his back, you do once you get out to the trash can, it's you know how many of you young people when your parents have asked you something to do, okay, have gone into your room, put your head in your pillow, and then jammed your pillow deep into your mattress and gone, I can't wait to leave this house.
Oh, only me? Okay? Because parents will frustrate you to the core because they're asking of you things that you don't understand.
But this son was special. Jesus was a son, but he was not like any other son that we see today. Oh, to have sons who would not want to resist authority but submit to it. It's amazing. She had been given she had given birth to a son.
Son. Some of your sons will be rejected and so was Mary's. It's amazing because as parents, I think we think it's honorable to fight for our children to not be rejected. But what if God's plan is that they are?
Because if we're rejected by men and accepted by God, is that okay?
Pastor Shawn Gray · 34:55
See, as parents, we might want to incubate our child from rejection, but their path forward might be rejection.
Matter of fact, if you're a son of God, you will be rejected by men if you're truly his.
And see, if he's rejected by men, how much more will you be rejected by men? See, the role of a parent is not to protect them from their path because you create a gospel that's not a gospel. Not the true gospel. The true gospel is if you put your faith in Christ, you become a son of God, you will be rejected as he was rejected.
That's the fact. This could not listen. Just track with me today, okay? I was trying to figure out if I would share about this and I need to close my sermon, but just track with me today. Google reviews shouldn't matter, but go check out the one I got this week. Go check it out. It's it's it's hilarious. Evidently, you need to hide your wives and hide your daughters from me.
Right? That's the Google review. Go check it out. And I want you to understand you will be rejected. So don't become so disillusioned by the fact somebody don't like you. Don't become brazen about it either and then try to make sure everybody goes and hates you. That's not the point. That's not the point. It would be nice if some people like you, but you will be rejected.
You will be rejected in your attempt to strive to do what is godly, what is right, what is pure, and people will not understand you, and they will hate you, and they will reject you. And if they could, they would kill you. You know why? Because you're made in his image. And if he was rejected, you will be rejected.
And if you were rejected as a son, your children will be rejected. And don't try to preach them a gospel that tells them they won't. And don't try to incubate them from their path in Christ. You know why we have people in school systems today who are believers in Christ? Young people who won't make a stand for what they believe is true according to this and the face of all kinds of progressive jargon and talk today.
They will not hold up truth high. You know why they won't do that? It's because they've been preached at that if they are in Christ, they won't be rejected. And they know that the truth will be projected. So they don't tell truth because you've told them they should never be rejected. So truth has been incubated inside the church and never gets out into a place where truth can change lives.
It is truth that calls people to repentance, not flattery, not agreement.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 37:59
It doesn't mean you have to be rude about it, but you can disagree when a lie is told you can hold truth higher.
And guess what's going to happen when you do? They will hate you and they will try to kill you. That's a fact. That's a fact.
He was a son. And to be a son means to be obedient and faithful to truth.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 38:25
Point 5God with us as a savior
Number five, and I'm almost done. God with us, a savior. I'll just kind of do these really quick. I had stuff I wanted to share, but I don't have time. I'm out. Time out. Time out. God with us as a savior. And he called his name Jesus for he will save his people. All of us are like, "Yeah, that's right.
He's a savior. Save me. Save me from my school loans. Save a brother. Save me. Save me from my illness. Save me. And he might save you from your school loans. And somebody may pay them all off. He might save you from your illness. He might not. But you said you're a savior. It says it in the Scripture.
And he will save them from their sins. That's guaranteed if you're his. If he calls you, there's repentance. If you're his and filled with the spirit, he will save you from your sins. Notice here, he don't save everyone. Not everyone's saved. That is why there is a hell. Are you with me today? Be careful to not tiptoe into some kind of universalist idea that now he's always going to save me from every problem.
You know, it's amazing to me because people are not there. Many people in the church today, greater evangelical church, are not universalists. They don't believe that everyone in the last day is going to be saved, but they do believe that they're going to be saved from every problem they face today. So they're universalist in part, just not in the salvation part, not in the sin part.
He won't save everyone from the sin. There's a hell. He will not save everyone, but he'll always save me if I call on his name and put him first. Why don't you Why don't you have a conversation with all the apostles and how they died? Why don't you go read the hall of faith? Read the first part. See everybody people being raised from the dead, people being healed, and then it just shifts on you like a big right hook.
And now people are getting cut in half by Sauls and their intrails pulled out. And it's the same faith that helps them do both. What Bible we reading today, folks?
He saves you from your sin. And if he does that's more than you deserve.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 41:21
That's more than you deserve. We should be thankful that he does that. We should be thankful.
We've got to understand our greatest problem is not our illness. Our greatest problem is not our bills. Our greatest problem is not our school loan.
Our greatest problem is not that person who doesn't like us. Our greatest problem is our sin.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 41:42
And it's destroying us. And it's not just destroying us temporally. Temporarily, it's destroying us eternally.
Point 6God with us as Lord
Okay, last one. God with us as Lord. I'll read some Scriptures and I really have to close. When Joseph woke from his sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him. He took his wife but knew her not until she had given birth to a son and he called his name Jesus. And then here's some Scripture in Luke and Acts and Philippians.
Okay, here's the Luke one. Luke 6:46, "Why do you call me Lord, and do and not and you do not do what I tell you?" Acts 2:36, God has made him both Lord and Christ.
This Jesus whom you crucified is both Lord and Christ. It's amazing today.
We want the Christ portion minus the Lord portion.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 42:43
Acts 2 36 I just read Philippians 2 9-11 says therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name so that at the name of Jesus every n every knee shall bow every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is my homeboy Jesus Christ is my friend and in part he is a friend of us but that's not what it says here.
Jesus Christ is Lord and this brings glory to the father God with us as Lord.
So let me tell you it is exciting Emmanuel that God is with us. That's exciting. But maybe we should view it a little bit more like a person driving down the road seeing a policeman on the side of it because this is a holy God that drew near.
This is a holy God who is still near by the Holy Spirit.

And if we see ourself rightly when we hear that he's drawn near to us, we should break check.
It would affect our worship if we knew who it was we were praying would show up in the room.
