Matthew 3:13–15Scripture
Matthew 3:13-15 says this. Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John to be baptized by him. And John would have prevented him saying, "I need to be baptized by you and do you come to me?" And notice here he doesn't say this. He thinks this. He said John would have prevented him and he would have said I need to be baptized by you and do you come to me but Jesus answered him although he didn't say anything let it be so now for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness then John consented.
Then John consented and that's it. So, I want to talk about this morning.
There's always a yes before an actual yes.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 1:02
There's a yes before a yes.
And sometimes that yes that comes before a yes is more real than the superficial yes you get second.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 1:06
Did you know that you can obey and not have a heart for obedience? You can do all the right stuff, but it not be for the right reasons.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 1:17
How many of you know that you can tell your children to do something, they can roll their eyes, huff, and they can do it, but it doesn't count.
Doesn't really count anymore. Because if you go like this, if you're like and then you and you go and you do it, they did it.
They obeyed. But in their heart, they did not. In their heart, they were infinitely rebellious.
Introduction
And so, how many of you know the fact that the heart saying yes is as important as the body saying yes? Sometimes it's often as a parent more important because if your heart says yes, that's really what God is after.
I grew up in a church and it was a church that really they talked about holiness. Sorry, that's is holiness. And basically, it's it's making sure that you abide by and follow all the things that God intends for you to do in your life. And that sounds wonderful and it is wonderful. And we should live holy lives not in our own strength but by what God has done by making us a new creation.
The reality is you can strive to be like Christ and never be like Christ.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 2:54
There is something that has to take place in your heart and your life that is way beyond you. He grabs a hold of you. He transforms you. He changes you into a new creation. The things that he lives out when he walks here on earth is not necessar does not necessarily come natural to us.
The reality is we don't choose to live like him. We are made like him and we are made into his image.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 3:16
And God transforms our heart and our lives. And that's the reality of it all. And so we I grew up in a church that talked a lot about what it is to be like Christ. And so they would talk about what you wouldn't do and what you should do.
And a lot of my life was marked by that. So growing up I would know the right thing to do. And oftentimes I would do those things begrudgingly because that's what we were taught to do. You behave this way, you in this situation, you behave this way in this situation.
And so a lot of my life then was marked by what I would like to call rebellious obedience.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 4:05
It is that kind of obedience that does what it should do, although it doesn't want to do it. The kind of obedience that you get from your kids when they roll their eyes and they breathe deep, but they still do it. It's like, can I punish them for this? I'm not quite sure cuz they did what I asked them, but they rolled their eyes and I really don't know what to do with this situation.
So then you breathe deep and you roll your eyes. You know what I mean? Because you're having to deal with this situation. That's the way I felt like the earlier years of my life. That's what my life was marked by. I knew what to do and I did it, but my heart wasn't in it. And God wanted to do something in my heart in my life that there was a yes before the yes.
It's amazing because I gave him the superficial yes, but I never gave him the yes of my heart.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 4:58
It's crazy you can do that, right? I remember and some people are like, well, I don't even know what this is and so I'm not don't really want to talk about this today. I remember I felt that I wanted to with my life, I wanted to go into art.
So what I wanted to do, I had a scholarship for art. That's what I was going to do. I had submitted portfolios to college. I had a full ride, a semi full ride to college. And so that's what I was going to do with my life, right? I was going to do art. And I really don't know what you do for an occupation if you're an artist, but I was going to do that, right?
I had interned with Disney and made puppets. I'd done all kinds of stuff. And so maybe Disney's was my future. I'm not wasn't really sure that's kind of what I thought I might do with my life. And then I watched a movie and I realized that there was this kind of like stirring in my heart for ministry. Now I did not want to be a pastor at all did I want to be a pastor.
I had a lot of people in my family that were in ministry. A lot of pastors in my family that were in ministry. I thought they were all a little And quite honestly, the way that I marked them was men who were not men who would go get manicures and pedicures and they didn't do real men things for their life.
I wanted to grow up. I wanted to be a real man. A pastor friend of mine actually challenged me on that and said, "You but you wanted to be an artist." And I said, "Touche." On that but I really didn't want to have anything to do with ministry but I felt this nudge. We call that in the church a calling, right?
And oftentimes then we would talk in the church about it being a vocation. It be what you do and then it would be a destination where you do what you do.
And so I said yes. I said yes to the call, but it was a superficial yes. It was a rebellious yes. It was a yes because it was a yes given because I would be miserable if I did anything else. So it was begrudging. Like God has was so annoying about it. I did not want to do it, but I did it because I didn't want to be annoyed by him anymore.
You ever been there? Like it just pestures you until you say yes. And it's it is it seems like obedience, but it's obedience under duress. And much of my life was marked by this. I obeyed. I often and quickly gave God a yes. But there was a yes that did not come from the heart. And that's the yes he's after today in your heart.
Let me tell you when God asks you to do something, I know that in the church today, in the greater evangelical church today, what we tell you is that when you sign up with God and when you begin to walk with him, that everything is going to be easier. A matter of fact, if you accept his call, doors will open and miracles will ensue and you'll get that thing you want and you'll you'll everything all the every all your paths will be made straight and everything will be great.
But notice that when Jesus is about to kick off his ministry, notice in the next few chapters what begins to ensue for him.
See, often times we give a yes because we want our paths to be straight. And often times we think that yes, that God confirms that yes by everything being easier. And if it's not easier, it must be from Satan.
So then we begin to determine God's will based on ease.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 9:20
And the reality is that gets superficial yeses, but it doesn't get real yeses of the heart.
Many people will say yes if they can get what they want. Many people will say yes if all their paths are made straight. Everybody will say yes if a miracle will happen. Everybody will say yes if I say yes to God and then he'll heal me. If I say yes to God and he'll save my children. If I say yes to God and I'll get that job.
If I say yes to God and everything will go the way he intended.
But the reality is often times what follows a yes to God is all hell breaks loose.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 10:02
And it isn't because God didn't ordain it. And often times it isn't just a superficial yes where all hell breaks loose. It's a true yes of the heart that brings this treasure to your life.
But obedience isn't what I learned is obedience isn't an occupation and it's not a destination. Obedience is it's required everywhere.
See, I thought if I said yes to ministry that he would create destinations for ministry. Track with me here. And he would place me in those places. But I found that when you're called to ministry happens everywhere. And you don't wait till the destination, till you're tucked in sweetly and nicely into the place that will be easy for you to perform what he's asked you to do.
The reality is that often times the destination is everywhere. And often times the destination for ministry is outside the confines and the box that you want to create where you want ministry to happen.
Amen. I remember telling the Lord, listen, I'm going to give the Scripture, but I remember telling the Lord, "Okay, I'll do ministry, but I will never work with teenagers.
They're crazy. Never." You have my superficial yes with stipulations. You ever been there? Yes. But yes, God, I'll give my heart to you. But this one thing. Yes, God, I'll give and commit my life to you. But this one thing has to stay. I won't give you this. You can have my hands. You can have my legs. You can have my mind.
You can have my body. You can have my house. You can have my kids. You can have all this stuff.
But this one thing, this one thing, this one addiction, this one stronghold, this one issue, this one you can't have.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 12:24
Ministry is a journey. It's not a destination.
Point 1Obedience is a journey
Obedience is a journey. One, it's not a destination. Matthew 3:13 I can't open the Bible because it'll take me five minutes. But somebody read it. Brooke, read it real quick just real quick. Matthew 3:13 says, you can read it on your phone or says this.
Then Jesus came from Galilee to Jordan to John to be baptized by him. Jesus was in Galilee. Came to the Jordan to John to be baptized by him. Notice that it required him to leave his destination to go to another destination and that obedience is not found in one destination or the other destination.
Obedience is found in the journey. Yes. Amen. Whether he stayed or whether he went, he was either walking in obedience or he was walking in disobedience.
Regardless of where you are either walking in obedience or you are walking in disobedience.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 13:52
It's not destinational. I know many of us today think that, well, if God if you get me here, then I'll obey.
Then I'll really obey. Then I'll really be used by you. Then I'll really be effective for your kingdom. Then I'll really be faithful if you get me here. Because we think that's where God's going to use us.
But I've often found that God uses us on the way more than he uses us at the destination.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 14:22
Are you with me today?
I served It's funny because I told God no to youth ministry. I served for a lot of years. Brooke knows all the years in youth ministry because that's what I end up doing because God's sadistic and he thinks it's hilarious when you tell him what you're not going to do.
That's what you're doing. And it was entertaining and it was entertaining. I learned a lot. But then one day I came in and got fired from my position as a youth pastor. And I began remember thinking to myself, I can't continue ministry if I don't find another position as a pastor.
See, the destination had been destroyed. But the journey was still going. Are you with me today?
Did you know that the destination can be removed and you can still be obedient?
Pastor Shawn Gray · 15:29
To the calling. In other words, the calling is not limited by the destination.
If God calls, he equips. If he equips, he uses. If he uses wherever you go.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 15:48
And this marked an opportunity in my life to realize that true ministry happens not by destination, not inside the walls of the church, but happens everywhere you go.
The calling rest on a life of an individual. And that calling can be utilized wherever that individual is.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 16:08
I remember for years looking I remember for months looking for another pastor job. I couldn't find one. I couldn't find one. I mean, and I was doing a job. Listen, I know as a man, I know I said I didn't want to be a pastor because I wanted to be a real man, but I had no clue what any tool was.
I knew people were called tools sometimes. I knew that, but I kne I mean Allen wrench. I don't know. I didn't know. I did not know. Socket wrench. Ratchet. Ratchet. What did you Does the socket go on the ratchet? Ratchet go on the socket. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. Got a job as a mechanic in a place where everyone that was hired was an ex prisoner.
And you know, it's like basically everyone that's in construction's hazed, but this is hazing on steroids because you might get shipped.
Two. All right. And it was rough hazing. It was rough. I remember asking the Lord, "This cannot be the destination. You want me to fulfill my calling. Help me find a job." I remember praying. I didn't let Brooke know because I was mad at God. And she asked me to pray with her. And I was like, "God doesn't deserve my prayer." That's funny, right?
That's funny. Like, he needs your prayer to be fulfilled. I was mad. I didn't know how ministry could take place in a place like this. Like, all of these I thought were second cousins to the devil. Like, every single person I worked with, like it was awful. I remember ducking behind toolboxes and where they stamp car doors, big multi- ton car door stamps, dodging tools that I didn't know the name of.
They threw them at me because I didn't know the name of them. I maybe they thought they would help me remember them if they hit me in the head. I don't know what was going on, but it was rough. It was in this situation that I realized by God's grace that ministry can happen and it's not relegated down to destination.
But it is destination. But it isn't. But it is but it isn't. Ministry happened in that destination, but it wasn't the destination that was requisite. But it was important. Are you with me? But it wasn't important. But it was but it wasn't. It was the journey. Now, it says that God orders your steps. You make steps and God orders your steps.
And he has destinations he wants you to hit. And that's according to his sovereign will and we don't have to worry about that. When I look back at my life, I think that it was a pivotal and important destination. But God could teach me that anywhere that ministry happens and it's not relegated down to destination.
It's not important. The calling is about me. Jesus was called to go to the Jordan. Now this is different because it's prophetic and this fulfills the prophecy. So he had to go there. He had to go there. Those destinations in your life, did you have to go there? I don't know the answer to that question. I just know this that wherever God takes you, his will be worked out in your life.
It will be worked out in your life. I realized that ministry didn't have to happen inside the four walls of the church. It could happen outside the four walls of the church.
My prayers began to change from remove me from this to make me Christlike in this.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 20:36
Are you with me?
Because everywhere, if you're a believer, everywhere you show up, if you're hidden in Christ, guess who else shows up?
Pastor Shawn Gray · 20:49
Christ shows up. That's important. Well, we need to we need a little bit of Jesus in here. Are you a believer? Are you in there? Some of you are trying to escape destinations that God's trying to put you in. It's amazing because we want destinations that set us free financially, that bring ease to our life, that escalate and elevate our personhood and make us feel special and elevated.
But sometimes God sends you to hell holes, in the dark places of life, in places that are impossible. Where's those prayers?
We need believers who are lights who are willing to be sent to dark places.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 21:46
Anybody will be grateful to be sent to a place where you're made the leader, made awesome, celebrated.
But what happens when God sends you to the dark shadows and the recesses of the world? Right? Did you know that even on that journey, God shows up? And actually, in case you didn't know, he came for that place. When Jesus walked into the waters, this is symbolic of sin being atoned for.
He left Galilee and came to a dusty, dirty place to be baptized.
You know what I you know what I think sad is that in the church that we have the distinct ability to become a believer and so separate from the world that we're never like to it anymore. We're just light unto light.
I think your associations have to be and we need to build community in the church and we need to be we need to be encouraged by the fellowship and we need to be challenged and we need to be you know discipled and we need all of that. We need the church body. We need this type of community.
But when you alienate yourself from the world, who will be a light to the world?
Pastor Shawn Gray · 23:30
Jesus came to the Jordan. Jesus came to the Jordan. Obedience is not about achievement. And PS, the reason you obey is not so you can continue to live sinfully.
Can you be faithful in the small things right where you are? Maybe God's going to send you somewhere. Maybe you should be faithful wherever you are.
Is amazing because people declare how faithful they'll be at this destination, but they're unfaithful at home.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 24:29
I can pretty much guarantee you that you're not going to be more faithful over there than you were in your home.
Be faithful where you're at. Well, I'm going to be easy to deal with over there. I'm impossible to deal with here. Well, I'm going to be humble over there. I'm prideful here.
Notice that Jesus was the same in Galilee as he was in the Jordan.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 25:10
The journey. Why do we look at it as a journey rather than a destination? Because God has called you to something to faithful obedience wherever you are.
Point 2Obedience is instructed
So obedience is a journey. Number two, obedience is instructed. Matthew 3:14-15 says this. John would have prevented him saying, "I need to be baptized by you and do you come to me?" He would have he would have prevented him and said he would have he would have prevented Jesus by saying I need to be baptized by you and you're coming to me.
He would have but what stopped him from saying that? He would have prevented him saying I need to be baptized by you and do you come to me. But what happened that stopped him? Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Okay, I think this is important. Regardless of what order you think this happened, whether you think he actually said it or didn't actually say it, I have my opinions on that.
The reality is this. There was tension in the heart of John about what was about to happen. You have Jesus who has no sin coming to be baptized in baptism waters of repentance. Basically saying, "I have sinned and I'm going to turn from my sin." And he said, "This is just nonsense." So that's in the heart of John.
This is nonsense. That's in the heart of John. Notice what breaks through John's will. John does not will to baptize Jesus. That's not his will. He thinks it's crazy. How many of you have ever thought something's crazy? How many of you the Bible has asked you to do something that you think is crazy? Right? And we go, "That's crazy.
That's crazy." But look what breaks in to our will being opposite of God's will. Jesus said, "Let it be so now, for it's fitting to fulfill all righteousness."
Right now, John would have prevented him, John would have stopped Jesus if not for the word from him.
So John didn't stop him because he got a word.
The will of man submits to the word of God.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 28:25
For those who are saved, the will of man submits to the word of God. For those who are not saved, it does not submit. So what do believers need to walk in alignment with the Lord even when we don't understand why he does what he does? What is the man? What does man need? We need the word. We need the word.
Why do you think there's such a large attack on getting word into our hearts today?
Because it aligns you with the will of God. It makes your will in submission to his will. What does that what immediately turns John from going, "I'm not doing this. I refuse to do this. This is crazy." And matter of fact, we sometimes will go against God's will thinking that it's the right thing to do. We'll think it's right.
John thought he was right. Made sense to me. Still makes sense to me. Doesn't make any sense for John to baptize him. That don't make no sense. But God said to do it. The problem today is we have a bunch of people filling churches that don't know what God said. Amen.
We have a bunch of people in churches today trying to pray to get a word from God when he's already given his word.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 29:59
And we substitute this truth for a whisper.
God, just give me a word about that. That's not sufficient for you. This not good enough. No, but I need a word for my situation. So you believe in the insufficiency of his word. You believe this is insufficient for you. Sufficient for everybody else, but insufficient for you. No, but I need an exact word for this exact situation.
Why does he tell you to pray for wisdom if you can get an exact word for your exact situation? I thought this word counsels you, makes one wise so that you can make decisions with wisdom.
See, if obedience is instructed and instruction comes by his word, why is it that the church would rather be instructed by whispers than his word?
Pastor Shawn Gray · 31:23
Could it be that the enemy is involved with that and you want to stamp it as being God? Track with me here. I listen, I'm busting chops. I understand. Sean, why are you being so dogmatic about this? Because ultimately if we're if we read the word and then we get illumination by the word then God spoke to us through all these other things.
Now he spoke to you by his word and you are wise because of his word and you were it was the Holy Spirit illuminated his word and that's what it was made to do.
It's important that John did what he was supposed to do here, but he only does what he's supposed to do because they take their instruction by the word, not by a dream.
Are you with me today? All right, here we go.
When a man is run by his will, his feelings, his emotions, and his wants, it's because there isn't much word present.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 32:48
When the word is absent, disobedience is present. Jesus walks into the baptism water. He's ordained into purpose. He's immediately touched by trouble and he's tempted. He's tempered by temptation. All of this happens, let me tell you.
And you don't need an impression to endure that. You need a promise to endure that.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 33:28
You know why people burn out so much in our society?
Pastor Shawn Gray · 33:40
It's because they're functioning on impressions and not promises. And the moment that the impression becomes too heavy that brought them into that they declared this must be God, they will change this must be God and the impression to find something easier for them to live.
It's amazing how one day somebody will be impressed by God to do one thing and a month later they're impressed that God did not actually impress them at all because that impression took them into hell and caused them trouble.
You don't get to change your impression.
What God says one day, he says all days.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 34:25
Amen. God does not schizophrenic. He does not change his mind. He is not bipolar. He is not on medication. When God says something, he means something. Let me tell you something. And God has said something here. It is my will and it is for all holiness to be fulfilled.
He does not change his mind. Amen. Obedience is instructed. And let me tell you, obedience is instructed by his word. And the reason we have disobedient children in the church today is because we have uninstructed people in the church who don't value the word but value impressions over it.
Obedience is a journey. We have people that are disobedient in the church because they don't want to they don't want obedience to be a journey. They want it to be a destination. We have disobedient people in the church today because they don't want to be instructed by his word. They want to be instructed by feelings and impressions. But you're not obedient when you're instructed by those things.
You're obedient when you're instructed by his word.
Point 3Obedience is preceded by consent
Number three, obedience is preceded by consent. Notice here Matthew 5 or 3:15. Let it be so now, thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. Then John consented. Notice consent follows the word.
You can't consent unless you have a word.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 36:07
Consent precedes obedience. Then he consented. What was John consenting to? He consented to a role reversal. He consented to God's plan over his perception. He consented to the cost of obedience. He consented to being less than Christ. He consented to his life being lost for the sake of Christ. He consented to being beheaded. He consented to being in prison.
He consented to a life of forgottenness.
He consented.
Everybody wants to be used by God, but no one wants to be on the front lines of God's ministry. Everybody wants to be used by God, but no one wants to be shot at.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 37:12
Everybody wants to be used by God, but no one wants to be in darkness. Everybody wants to be used by God to help in times of trouble, but no one wants to be sent to trouble.
Everybody wants to be used by God when problems arise, but no one wants to have a problem.
The reality is that if you're his child, you will be sent to dark places. You'll be put on the front line of God's ministry.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 37:33
You'll have 50 holes in you by the middle of the afternoon because that's what it is when he calls.
When his word comes and when it beckons you to come, it beckons you under the cross. And the reality is you pick up the cross and you follow him and it will cost you everything.
It isn't I get everything I want and I don't have everything I don't want. It's amazing to me when people talk to me about God's will for their life and nothing of trouble is in the conversation.
That amazes me because I see that nowhere in the Bible. Nowhere. It don't exist. Well, God called me into ministry. God called me to do this. God called me to do a parent. My kids, man, when they came out of the womb, they never cried. God called me to be a mother. And when my child came out of the womb, she never cried.
Never. Not once. Not once. Not once. She slept through the night. First night, second night, third night, she slept through the night. She didn't even never need to eat. I never have to feed my kids. They're free. They're free. I don't even have to. They It's like It's like amazing. They're perfect health, perfect weight, perfect everything. They never need anything.
They make perfect straight eggs. They never sass me. They never roll their eyes at me. My kids are literally perfect. They're they're they're literally heaven spawn. It is amazing. They never do anything wrong. They never have a nasty attitude. They're always perfect. They're always perfect. God called me to be a mother. I must be really awesome because my kids are really awesome and nothing ever bad happens.
That's people's testimony when it comes to them being called stuff. You would say that mother who said that everything was perfect is insane. But when people talk about them walking in God's will in the church, you're okay with it. You're okay with insane.
Because when God calls you by his word, he calls you to the places you don't want to go.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 39:44
Because those places need Christ. And wherever you show up, he shows up.
I don't want to go where sin is. I just want to stay in the church. Stay incubated in the church. Stay with all these God.
By the way, people inside the church are as much of sinners as people outside the church.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 40:11
News flash. They just dress up better. Don't make me go out there with all those sinners. If you're in Christ, guess where God comes?
Right into the sinful waters. Amen. And wherever you show up, God shows up. And wherever God shows up, you show up. So guess where he's walking. He shows up where the sinners are. In case you didn't know, you're the chief of them. Yeah. He shows up where the problems are. He shows up where the sick people are. He shows up where the issues are.
He shows up there. He doesn't escape those things. He shows up there. He shows up where controversy abounds. He shows up where people don't want to hear about him. He shows up there. He shows up there. He sends his disciples where people will kill them if they talk about Christ. He shows up there. Well, just give me a platform where everybody will like me and everybody will know my name and everybody will think I'm awesome and everybody will think I'm, you know, slice of bread and some cheese and all that.
You know what I mean? Like, send me there. Send me there where everybody loves me and everybody is infatuated with me and everybody celebrates me and everybody says amen every time I say something, you know, and wax p and pontificate and wax eloquently about all these wonderful things.
They just love me and they think I'm awesome. Send me there. Send me there. Yeah, send me there. But they're sent with to people that hate them. Hate the good news and kill them. Saw them aunderder. Cut them in half. Dismbow them. This is where they go. Well, I felt God's call. I get to get disembowled for him.
Where's that in Bible study? I felt God's call. God sending me to the dark recesses of the world to be Christ. No, it's I felt God's call and I got this gift and I got this raise and I got this promotion and I'm going to be special and I'm going to be awesome and I'm going to be privileged and I'm going to be this is a place that will elevate me in my pride and make me more prideful.
Where is that in the Bible?
Jesus came down in all humility, but we want to be lifted up in all pride.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 42:43
You see the difference?
Jesus forsook his life to give you life.
Pastor Shawn Gray · 42:57
And so did John. John knew that when he baptized Jesus would be headed with authority and John would be beheaded and have his authority removed.
Are you willing to put your neck on the line for God? Or you just want to give him a superficial yes?
Pastor Shawn Gray · 43:28
Because God's called each of you to be hidden in Christ. Do you know what that cost you? Well, it don't cost me anything because we get elevated today without having to pay any price. Amen. Jesus paid a price that you could not pay.
But that does not mean you will not pay a price today. What are you consenting to? And I'll close with this.
Consent opens the door and obedience walks through it.
